The Exotic Touch: Wolfdog & Specialty Breed Grooming

Our experienced groomers are trained to handle even the most unique canines, including wolfdogs and other specialty breeds.

Hairless Breeds

  • Chinese Crested: Regular skin care is vital. Baths, moisturizing, and sun protection are essential.
  • Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless): Similar skin care needs to the Chinese Crested. Some have sparse hair that requires gentle brushing.

Giant Breeds With Profuse Coats

  • Tibetan Mastiff: This impressive breed has a thick double coat, making mat prevention crucial. Frequent brushing and professional de-shedding treatments are important.
  • Komondor: Their unique corded coat requires specialized care from puppyhood to maintain its form. Bathing adult Komondors is very time-intensive due to the corded coat.

"Wolf-like" Breeds

  • Czechoslovakian Vlcak: Their dense double coat closely resembles a wolf's fur. Expect heavy shedding and regular brushing is necessary.
  • Northern Inuit Dog: This coat type is similar to the Vlcak, with the same shedding considerations and grooming needs.

Unique Coat Textures

  • Puli: Similar to a Komondor, their coat forms natural cords. However, they're smaller, and the cords are thinner, making grooming slightly easier.
  • Bedlington Terrier: This breed has a unique coat; it's soft when young but transitions to a crisp but light coat as an adult. They need regular professional grooming to maintain their distinctive shape.

Grooming Considerations for Different Canine Breed Types

Low Maintenance Grooming

Short, Smooth Coats: Breeds like Boxers, Beagles, Greyhounds, Chihuahuas, and Dobermans. They need occasional baths and weekly brushing to remove loose hair.

Wiry Coats: Breeds like Dachshunds, Schnauzers, and some Terriers. They benefit from hand-stripping (a specialized grooming technique) a few times a year and regular brushing.

Moderate Maintenance Grooming

Double Coats: Breeds like Siberian Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Samoyeds. They have a dense undercoat and longer topcoat. Regular brushing (especially during shedding seasons) and professional de-shedding treatments are crucial.

"Doodle" Breeds: Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, etc. These mixes inherit varying coat types. Regular brushing prevents matting, and professional trims maintain the desired length.

High Maintenance Grooming

Long, Silky Coats: Breeds like Shih Tzus, Maltese, Afghan Hounds, and Yorkshire Terriers. They require daily brushing to prevent mats and frequent professional grooming to keep their hair manageable.

Curly/Corded Coats: Breeds like Poodles, Bichon Frises, and Komondors. These coats need specialized care to maintain their sculpted styles or signature cords, including regular clipping and bathing.

Special Considerations

Brachycephalic Breeds: Bulldogs, Pugs, etc. These breeds need special care in cleaning their facial folds to prevent infections.
